Mariclare Costello is a retired American actress whose work spanned television, film, and stage. A native of Peoria, Illinois, she built a career across multiple decades before transitioning to academia. She is a lifetime member of The Actors Studio.
Costello's Broadway career ran from 1964 to 1970 and encompassed several productions, including Tartuffe, After the Fall, But for Whom Charlie, The Changelings, and Harvey. These credits established her as a working stage actress during a significant period in American theater.
On television, Costello is best known for her recurring role as Rosemary Hunter Fordwick on The Waltons, a part she held from 1972 to 1977. Following that series, she took on the role of matriarch Maggie Fitzpatrick in The Fitzpatricks, a drama that aired in 1977.
Her film work includes the 1971 cult horror film Let's Scare Jessica to Death, in which she portrayed a hippie-vampire.
In her personal life, Costello was married to actor Allan Arbus until his death in 2013. The couple had one child. After retiring from acting, she served as an acting professor at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
