About

Marian Swayne (July 9, 1891 – August 21, 1973) was an American actress whose career spanned both stage and film. Born in the late nineteenth century, she worked across multiple performance mediums before concentrating on the stage in the mid-1920s.

Swayne entered the film industry in 1911, beginning her screen work at Solax Studios under the direction of Alice Guy-Blaché. Her early filmography included Falling Leaves (1912), Brennan of the Moor (1913), and A House Divided (1913), in which she played Diana Hutton. In 1917, J. Arthur Nelson, president of Dominion Film Corporation, announced that Swayne had signed a three-year contract to serve as the leading woman for that company's planned production site in British Columbia. That same year she appeared in several pictures, including The Little American as Mona, The Deemster, Little Miss Fortune, The Road Between, and The Little Samaritan. She also worked with Gaumont Film Company and Mutual Film during her screen career. Later film credits included Crimson Cross (1921), The Man from Glengarry (1922), and Counterfeit Love (1923). Her film work concluded in 1924, several years before the silent era itself came to an end.

Swayne subsequently turned to the stage, performing under both the spellings Marian Swayne and Marion Swayne. Her Broadway career included a 1925 appearance in The Clouds, in which she portrayed the role of June Phelps.

She was married to fellow screen actor Joseph Levering. Swayne died in New York in August 1973.
