About
Born in Manhattan on August 23, 1928, Marian Seldes was the daughter of Alice Wadhams Hall and Gilbert Seldes. Among her teachers were Sanford Meisner, Katharine Cornell, and Martha Graham. She had one daughter, Katharine, from her first marriage to Julian Claman. Her second marriage, to Garson Kanin in 1990, lasted until his death in 1999.
Her stage career began in 1947 with a role as a serving girl in Medea, directed by John Gielgud and starring Judith Anderson. She became closely associated with the Albee canon, playing various roles across his works. The Guinness Book of World Records recognized her as "most durable actress" for her 1,809 Broadway performances in Ira Levin's Deathtrap.
Film credits include "The Greatest Story Ever Told," "Digging to China" (with Kevin Bacon), "Town and Country" (with Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn), and "Mona Lisa Smile" (with Julia Roberts). Television work spanned "Studio One," "Philco Television Playhouse," "Perry Mason," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Law & Order," "Murphy Brown," and "Murder, She Wrote."
Marian Seldes taught acting at The Juilliard School from 1967 to 1991 and joined Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus in 2002. Broadway theatre marquees were dimmed in her honor on October 8, 2014.
