About

Marian Grudeff (April 18, 1927 – November 4, 2006) was a Canadian concert pianist, music teacher, and musical theatre composer of Bulgarian origin, born in Toronto, Ontario. She demonstrated exceptional musical ability from an early age, studying piano under Mona Bates and performing Liszt's Hungarian Fantasy with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at the age of eleven. Her first solo recital took place at the Eaton Auditorium, and throughout the 1940s she performed widely across Canada and the United States.

Grudeff joined the faculty of the Royal Conservatory of Music in 1948, remaining there until 1952. During this period she also expanded into theatrical work, serving as musical director of the Toronto revue Spring Thaw in 1950. Her involvement with that production continued through the 1950s and into the early 1960s, during which she directed, contributed songs, and performed as pianist. Her songwriting for Spring Thaw was done in collaboration with Ray Jessel, a partnership that would define much of her subsequent career.

Grudeff and Jessel brought their collaboration to Broadway with the musical Baker Street, for which Grudeff served as a book writer and contributed music and lyrics alongside Jessel. The production relocated both writers to New York City, where it ran for more than 300 performances. The two continued working together on a revised version of Hellzapoppin', staged in Montreal during Expo 67, and co-wrote the musical Life Can Be - Like Wow, produced at the Charlottetown Festival in 1969.

Grudeff returned to the Royal Conservatory of Music in 1972 and taught there until 1979. She resumed concert performances in 1976, giving recitals in Toronto and Bulgaria. Following 1981, she taught piano privately in Toronto and worked as a musical director at Hart House Theatre, where she became a mentor to Don McKellar and Lisa Lambert, who later created the musical The Drowsy Chaperone. Grudeff continued teaching privately until her retirement and died in Toronto in 2006.
