About

Marguerite Clayton, born Margaret Fitzgerald on April 12, 1891, in Ogden, Utah, was an American actress who worked in both stage and silent film. Her father was a mining engineer, and she received her education at St. Mary's Academy in Salt Lake City, Utah. Clayton died on December 20, 1968, in Los Angeles, California, as the result of a road accident, and was buried alongside her husband, Major General Victor Bertrandias, at Arlington National Cemetery.

Clayton's stage work included a Broadway appearance in 1904, when she performed in the musical Me, Him and I. Her career subsequently shifted toward film, where she became a prolific presence in the silent era. Beginning in 1909 with A Mexican's Gratitude and The Heart of a Cowboy, both made with Broncho Billy Anderson, she went on to appear in more than 170 films before her screen career concluded in 1928. A significant portion of her film work consisted of westerns, many of which featured Anderson or Harry Carey. Among her employers during this period was Essanay.

Her filmography across those two decades spanned a wide range of productions, including A Christmas Revenge and His Regeneration in 1915, The Prince of Graustark in 1916, and Hit-The-Trail Holliday and Inside the Lines in 1918. Later credits included The New Moon in 1919, Bride 13 and The Pleasure Seekers in 1920, and The Inside of the Cup in 1921. Through the mid-1920s she continued working steadily, appearing in films such as Desert Driven, Tiger Thompson, and The Street of Tears in 1923 and 1924, followed by Wolf Blood in 1925 and The Palm Beach Girl in 1926. Her final screen credit was Inspiration in 1928.
