About
Margery Kathleen Maude was an English actress of stage, screen, and television, born on 29 April 1889 in Wimbledon, London. She was the elder daughter of actors Cyril Maude and Winifred Emery Maude, and her Broadway career spanned more than five decades, from 1913 to 1965.
Maude came from a theatrical family, and her early stage work reflected that heritage. In 1911, she appeared in a production of Rip van Winkle alongside her father, who played the title role, while her mother also took a part in the same production. A contemporary notice of that performance described Maude as having played her role with peculiar sweetness, calling her a charming little actress who was dainty, earnest, and unaffected.
Her Broadway credits included Diamond Orchid, Escapade, First Lady, The High Ground, and O Mistress Mine, among other productions. The breadth of her New York stage work, extending from the early twentieth century through the mid-1960s, established her as a sustained presence in American theater despite her London origins.
On 23 July 1917, Maude married Joseph Warren Burden in New York City. The couple had three children: Joseph Jr., born in 1918 and died in 1944, Winifred, and Pamela.
Maude died on 7 August 1979 at her home near Cleveland, Ohio, at the age of 90.
