About
Marcus Bartlett Giamatti, born October 3, 1961, in New Haven, Connecticut, is an American actor, musician, writer, and director. He is the son of Toni Marilyn (née Smith) and A. Bartlett Giamatti, who served as both president of Yale University and commissioner of Major League Baseball, and the older brother of actor Paul Giamatti. Giamatti attended Foote School and Hopkins School before enrolling at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he was a member of the Delta Sigma fraternity. He subsequently studied at Yale University and earned a graduate degree from the Yale School of Drama, where he received the Carole Dye Award for Excellence in Performance.
Giamatti began his professional acting career on the soap opera One Life to Live. His Broadway work includes a 1997 appearance in The Young Man from Atlanta. On television, he became widely recognized for his series regular role on the CBS drama Judging Amy, in which he played Peter Gray, the title character's older brother, across the show's six-season run from 1999 to 2005. He has guest-starred on numerous television series, among them The X-Files, Homicide: Life on the Street, Monk, The Mentalist, House M.D., Criminal Minds, Fringe, The Closer, Revenge, Bones, and NCIS: Los Angeles. His film appearances include Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, Necessary Roughness, and the television docudrama Pirates of Silicon Valley.
Beyond acting, Giamatti is an accomplished musician who plays bass guitar in several Los Angeles-based bands, including the alternative folk-rock group Olivea and the psychedelic jam band Rebel Soul. He also works as a session musician and holds membership in Musicians Local 47. In addition to his performance career, he serves as an associate professor of theatre on a tenure track and heads the directing program at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he teaches acting and directing and regularly helms Temple Theaters productions.
Giamatti is married to singer and songwriter Bree Olivea Giamatti, born Olivea Watson. Together they have three daughters: Ophelia Rosalee, born in 2009; Floralina Delilah, born in 2012; and Magnolia Pearl, born in 2015. In 1989, Giamatti threw the ceremonial first pitch at the World Series opener held in Oakland, California.
