About

Marcus D'Amico (4 December 1965 – 16 December 2020) was a British-American actor who worked across film, television, and stage. Born in Germany to an American father and a British mother, he was raised in the United Kingdom, where he attended Reading Blue Coat School and Redroofs Theatre School. He died on 16 December 2020 of pneumonia at his home in Oxfordshire, England, at the age of 55, survived by his mother, two sisters, a half-brother, and a son and daughter.

D'Amico began his screen career with small roles in Superman II (1980) and Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket (1987). He became widely recognized for playing Michael "Mouse" Tolliver in the 1993 television miniseries Tales of the City, a role he described as "exhausting, enlightening and challenging." He did not return for the 1998 sequel More Tales of the City, with the part being recast with Paul Hopkins. Author Armistead Maupin stated publicly that D'Amico had expressed ambivalence about reprising the role and that the production sought an actor who would embrace it enthusiastically. D'Amico's additional television work included guest appearances in Jeeves & Wooster (1993), As Time Goes By (1994), and Murder Most Horrid (1996), as well as the UK police drama The Bill (2002) and a recurring role in the soap opera Family Affairs (2005).

D'Amico expressed a personal preference for stage work throughout his career. His theatre credits included a production of Julius Caesar at London's Young Vic Theatre, The Boys Next Door at London's Comedy Theatre, and a 1992 Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of Louis in Angels in America. In 2003 he appeared in The Lisbon Traviata at the King's Head Theatre in London, and the following year he joined the London cast of Mamma Mia!

On Broadway, D'Amico appeared in An Inspector Calls in 1994, a credit that earned him a Theatre World Award that same year. Originally from Frankfurt, Germany, he built a career that spanned multiple decades and mediums, and in 2003 he noted that while he had been typecast in gay roles following Angels in America and Tales of the City, the concern no longer troubled him.
