About

Marcus Carl Franklin, born February 24, 1993, is an American actor who has worked across stage, film, and television. He appeared on Broadway in 2004 in Caroline, or Change, having also performed in the production's off-Broadway run prior to its Broadway engagement.

Franklin is perhaps most widely recognized for his role in the 2007 Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There, written and directed by Todd Haynes. In the film, he portrays one of several incarnations of Dylan, a character who identifies himself as "Woody Guthrie" and is depicted as a young hobo riding freight trains while carrying a guitar case inscribed with the words "This machine kills fascists" — a phrase associated with the actual guitar of Woody Guthrie. As part of the role, Franklin performed a rendition of Dylan's "When the Ship Comes In," which was included on the film's official soundtrack album. The performance earned him a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male in 2008.

His television work includes a 2004 appearance on Law & Order, in which he played a character named Tate in the episode "Can I Get a Witness?" The following year, he appeared in the HBO film Lackawanna Blues, portraying Ruben Santiago Jr. Subsequent television credits include The Water Is Wide in 2006, where he played Charles, and Blue Bloods in 2011, in which he appeared as Tom Mackey in the episode "Age of Innocence."

Franklin's film credits beyond I'm Not There include Be Kind Rewind in 2008, in which he played James, and The Art of Getting By in 2011, where he portrayed a character named Will. He also appeared in The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete in 2013 and But Not for Me in 2015, again in the role of Will. Earlier in his career, he appeared as himself in the 2003 television film Dragon Tales Let's Start a Band.
