About
Born Makoto Iwamatsu in Kobe, Japan, in 1933, Mako ranks among the very few Japanese actors ever nominated for an Oscar. At 15, he moved to the United States to rejoin his parents, who had emigrated earlier. Following service in the U.S. military, he pursued a career in film and theater. His film credits include "The Sand Pebbles", "Conan The Barbarian", "Seven Years in Tibet", "Pearl Harbor", "Memoirs of a Geisha", and the 1999 Japanese film "Owls' Castle". Mako also co-founded East West Players, the first Asian-American theater company.
