About
Mahlon Preston Hamilton, Jr. was an American stage and screen actor born on June 15, 1880, who died on June 20, 1960, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, from cancer. He was originally from Virginia and was the eldest of four children, with his three younger siblings all being girls. His father worked as a bartender, and census records suggest his mother passed away around 1899. Before pursuing a career in acting, Hamilton served with the Maryland National Guard and studied at the Maryland Agricultural College, the institution now known as the University of Maryland, College Park.
Hamilton's Broadway career spanned from 1908 to 1914, during which he appeared in both plays and musicals. His stage credits included the plays When Claudia Smiles and Israel, as well as the musicals The Chaperons and The Girl Question. The external record also associates him with additional productions from that period, including The Great Question and Overnight.
In 1914, Hamilton transitioned to film work, embarking on a screen career that extended through 1950 and encompassed more than 90 films, with his earliest work falling within the silent era. In his personal life, he married Aleta Farnum in 1918; the marriage ended in divorce in 1925.
