Madolyn Smith is a retired American actress born on April 21, 1957, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She graduated from the University of Southern California and built a career spanning stage, film, and television before retiring in the mid-1990s.
Smith made her Broadway debut in 1978, appearing in the musical Pal Joey. Her transition to film came two years later when she was cast as Pam in Urban Cowboy (1980), the role that first brought her widespread public attention. She went on to appear in several notable films during the 1980s, including 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984), the sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the comedy All of Me (1984). That same year she appeared in Funny Farm (1988) alongside Chevy Chase and The Super (1991) with Joe Pesci.
Television occupied a significant portion of Smith's career throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. She appeared in the TV movies Pray TV, Rehearsal for Murder, and Deadly Intentions, and portrayed Jehan Sadat, wife of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, in the 1983 miniseries Sadat. In 1984 she played Dorothy, wife of comedian Ernie Kovacs, in Ernie Kovacs: Between the Laughter. She took the lead role of Tracy Whitney in the 1986 miniseries If Tomorrow Comes, based on Sidney Sheldon's novel of the same name. Her television work continued with the 1990 movies The Plot to Kill Hitler and The Rose and the Jackal, the 1990 miniseries The Kennedys of Massachusetts, and multiple episodes of the 1993 drama series Class of '96. She guest-starred in a 1989 episode of the sitcom Cheers titled "What's Up, Doc?" and had been the first choice of the show's creators to replace Shelley Long. Her final television appearance came in a 1994 episode of Due South, after which she retired from acting. She later contributed narration to the 2010 documentary Louis Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture.
In 1988, Smith married National Hockey League player Mark Osborne.
