Martin began her performing career at a young age, appearing at age seven in the Broadway National Tour of The Sound of Music alongside Richard Chamberlain. Two years later she took on the role of young Cosette in the Broadway National Tour of Les Misérables. At ten years old, she made her Broadway debut in the title role of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, a performance that led to her becoming the youngest presenter in the history of the Tony Awards in 2003. The New York Times profiled her when she was twelve. She subsequently appeared on Broadway in The Pillowman, sharing the stage with Jeff Goldblum and Billy Crudup, and later originated the role of Jean Fordham in the Broadway production of August: Osage County. In 2006 she contributed voice work to the animated film Ice Age: The Meltdown. Beginning in 2007, Martin joined the Showtime comedy-drama Californication, playing Rebecca "Becca" Moody, the teenage daughter of David Duchovny's character, a role she held across multiple seasons. During the series she performed songs including "Only Women Bleed," "Don't Let Us Get Sick," and "Surrender." She also appeared in the Criminal Minds Season 7 episode "Heathridge Manor" and had a guest role on The Good Wife. From 2014 to 2016, she played Shelley Godfrey in the second and third seasons of the Netflix horror series Hemlock Grove. In 2019, she portrayed Madeline, a recurring colleague of Abe's in his activist pursuits, during the third season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Martin is also recognized for her voice work in animation. She voiced Fionna Campbell, Finn's female counterpart, across multiple episodes of the Cartoon Network series Adventure Time, including "Fionna and Cake," "Bad Little Boy," "The Prince Who Wanted Everything," "Five Short Tables," and "Fionna and Cake and Fionna," and later reprised the role in the Max spin-off series Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake.
