About
Mabel Paige (December 19, 1880 – February 9, 1954) was an American actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television across more than five decades. Born in New York City, she began performing at the age of four, making an early appearance in Van, the Virginian.
By the time Paige was eleven, she had transitioned into stock theater, where she built an extensive stage résumé that included Little Lord Fauntleroy in 1892, Rip van Winkle in 1899, and At Cozy Corners in 1905. She developed a particularly devoted following in the American South, where she earned the designation Idol of the South. To serve that regional audience, she operated multiple touring companies under her name, including the Mabel Paige Theatrical Company, the Mabel Paige Repertoire Company, and the Mabel Paige Southern Company.
Following her marriage, Paige stepped away from performing to raise her family, remaining absent from show business for more than a decade. Financial difficulties eventually brought her back to the profession. Her return included work in silent films for the Lubin Company, where Oliver Hardy served as her leading man in a series of romantic comedies. She went on to appear in more than fifty films between 1914 and 1953.
Paige's Broadway career extended from 1934 to 1951 and encompassed six productions. Her first Broadway credit was Lost Horizons in 1934, followed by Murder in the Cathedral in 1936, Western Waters in 1937, Out of the Frying Pan in 1941, Two Blind Mice in 1949, and Gramercy Ghost in 1951.
Among her final professional appearances was a role on the CBS television sitcom I Love Lucy. She played Mrs. Hansen in the episode titled "The Girls Go Into Business," which aired on October 12, 1953. Paige died of a heart attack in Van Nuys, California on February 9, 1954, at the age of 73.
