About
Mabel Brownell (December 19, 1883 – January 23, 1972) was an American stage actress and director whose career extended from the early 1900s through the 1920s.
Brownell was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, though one source places her birth year as 1888 rather than 1883. She completed her secondary education at Hughes High School in 1902 and pursued additional training in music and elocution. Her professional debut came in 1903, when she appeared in Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush by Ian Maclaren, the same year she made her first trip to the American West.
Her Broadway career included a lead role in the 1907 revival of Ben-Hur, a credit verified in theatrical records. That appearance carried lasting recognition: when the film adaptation of Ben-Hur premiered in 1959, Brownell was among those invited to attend as a former star of the stage production. In 1909, she traveled to London to star in William Vaughn Moody's The Great Divide. She also led the Mabel Brownell-Clifford Stork Company, a theatre company based in Newark, New Jersey, and continued acting into the 1920s, frequently performing outside New York City.
Brownell was known for the depth of preparation she brought to her roles. In 1917, she spent six weeks living in a boarding house in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, in order to authentically portray a laborer's wife in a steel town for Eugene Walter's Just a Woman.
Later in her career, Brownell moved into directing. In 1927 she directed Immoral Isabella, and the following year she directed two Broadway productions: Mrs. Dane's Defense and Within the Law. Both shows featured overlapping casts that included Violet Heming, Stanley Logan, Robert Warwick, and Julia Hoyt.
In 1935, Brownell married businessman Louis Vincent Aronson, becoming his second wife. She was widowed in 1940. She died on January 23, 1972, in New York City at the age of 88.
