About

Mabel Ida Albertson was born on July 24, 1901, in Haverhill, Massachusetts, to Flora (Craft) and Leopold Albertson, Russian-born Jewish immigrants. Her mother worked as a stock actress while also supporting the family through employment in a shoe factory. Albertson's younger brother was actor Jack Albertson, who later gained recognition for his role as Grandpa Joe in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Albertson received her formal training at the New England School of Speech and Expression and traced her entry into show business to age thirteen, when she earned five dollars per performance playing piano behind palm trees for a reader.

Her early professional work spanned stock productions, vaudeville, and nightclubs, including appearances alongside Jimmy Durante. She later relocated to California and became involved with the Pasadena Playhouse. In addition to her performance work, Albertson contributed as a writer for radio programs and was heard on Dress Rehearsal, Joe Rines' Dress Rehearsal, and the Phil Baker Show.

Albertson's Broadway career ran from 1962 to 1965 and included two productions: The Egg in 1962 and Xmas in Las Vegas in 1965. Her stage work was part of a broader career that encompassed film, television, and radio across several decades.

On screen, Albertson accumulated an extensive list of television credits. She is perhaps best known for portraying Phyllis Stephens, Darrin's mother, on the sitcom Bewitched, a character defined by her neurotic and interfering nature who habitually ended her visits by asking her husband Frank to take her home due to a sick headache. From 1972 to 1973, she played Mabel, the mother-in-law of Paul Lynde, on The Paul Lynde Show. She also appeared on multiple episodes of The Jack Benny Program, playing the mother of Jack Benny despite being seven years his junior, and portrayed the mother of Barbara and Margaret Whiting in Those Whiting Girls.

Her guest appearances spanned a wide range of series. She played Carrie Wilson in the Season 6 episode of Perry Mason titled "The Case of the Hateful Hero" in 1962, and appeared as the mother of Marilyn Munster's would-be suitor in the first broadcast episode of The Munsters, "Munster Masquerade." Additional credits include Howard Sprague's mother on The Andy Griffith Show, Donald Hollinger's mother on That Girl, Dick Van Dyke's mother on The New Dick Van Dyke Show, Irene Brady on The Tom Ewell Show, Susannah's mother on Accidental Family, Alice's mother in Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, Miss Ramsey on Hazel, Mrs. White on The Lucy Show, Eileen Ruby on Make Room For Daddy, Ethel Kendricks on the Mary Tyler Moore Show, Gertrude Mills on The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, and the dean of a women's college on The Tab Hunter Show. She appeared in The Time Tunnel in Season 1, Episode 30, "Town of Terror," and played Jessie Gaynor in the Dragnet 1967 episode "The Big Bullet."

Her western television appearances included the role of Ma Smalley in the 1957 Gunsmoke episode "Cows and Cribs," the title character in the 1963 Gunsmoke episode "Kate Heller," and Gody Baines in the 1961 Gunsmoke episode "Long, Long Trail." She played Kalla, Gypsy Queen, in Season 2, Episode 24 of Rawhide, and Madam Adella in the 1966 Bonanza episode "A Dollar's Worth of Trouble." In the 1952–53 season of Adventures of Superman, she portrayed Kate White, Perry White's sister, in the episode "Drums of Death," which originally aired January 16, 1953.

Among her film appearances, Albertson played a proper banker's wife in Ma and Pa Kettle at Waikiki in 1955. Her other film credits include She's Back on Broadway, So This Is Love, About Mrs. Leslie, Forever Darling, The Long Hot Summer, Don't Give Up the Ship, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, and the 1972 screwball comedy What's Up, Doc?, in which she played Mrs. Van Hoskins, a wealthy woman whose jewels are stolen.

Albertson died on September 28, 1982, at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California, of Alzheimer's disease, following seven years of declining health. She was 81 years old. Her ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean. Her brother Jack Albertson had died a few months earlier from colon cancer.
