About
Ma-Anne Dionisio is a Filipino-Canadian singer and actress born on 16 July 1973. The middle child among five sisters, she relocated with her family from the Philippines to Canada in 1990. Her Broadway appearances span from 1988 to 2002, with credits including Les Misérables and the 2002 revival of Flower Drum Song, in which she played Little Girl.
Dionisio's professional career began after people who heard her sing encouraged her to pursue performance. She secured a leading role in Experience Canada, a musical tour marking Canada's 125th anniversary, which was later broadcast as a television presentation. A member of the Miss Saigon casting department saw that broadcast and arranged an audition for the role of Kim in the Toronto production. Dionisio won the part and originated the role in that 1993 Toronto production, which served as the launching point for her career. Her performance earned her a Dora Mavor Moore Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical in 1994, and she received a second nomination in the same category in 2011.
Following her Toronto debut as Kim, Dionisio went on to perform the role in productions across multiple countries, including the West End, Sydney, and the United States. In July 2008, she reprised Kim in the seated production of Miss Saigon at The Muny in St. Louis, Missouri, and returned to the role again in July 2010 for a second Toronto production. On the U.S. touring circuit, she played Éponine in Les Misérables, becoming the second Asian actress to take on that role in western theater, following Lea Salonga. Her stage work also includes Bertrande de Rols in Martin Guerre on the West End and the role of Maria in West Side Story at the Stratford Festival in 1999.
Beyond the stage, Dionisio has appeared in film and television, including guest roles in Flashpoint, Remedy, and Schitt's Creek, as well as a lead role in the film The Waiting Room. In 2009, she became a founding artist of Theatre 20, a Toronto-based musical theatre company established by artists that year. She performed in Theatre 20's 2011 Concert Series at the Panasonic Theatre. Her stage credits also include Diana Goodman in a 2019 Toronto production of Next to Normal.
