About
Lynn Starling (September 13, 1888 – February 25, 1955) was an American playwright, screenwriter, and Broadway performer whose career spanned stage and screen across several decades. Born in the late nineteenth century, Starling worked in multiple capacities within the American entertainment industry, establishing credits both as a performer and as a writer for theater and film.
Starling's Broadway career ran from 1915 to 1920 and included appearances in the musical Three Showers as well as Treasure Island. These stage credits placed Starling among the working performers of the mid-to-late 1910s Broadway scene during a formative period in American theater.
As a playwright, Starling authored the 1923 stage play Meet the Wife, which later served as the basis for a 1931 film adaptation of the same name. The transition of that work from stage to screen reflected a broader pattern in Starling's career, which moved substantially into Hollywood screenwriting through the 1930s and 1940s.
Starling's filmography as a screenwriter was extensive. Early screen credits included Dumbbells in Ermine (1930) and Oh, for a Man! (1930), followed by a productive stretch in the early 1930s that included Transatlantic (1931), Always Goodbye (1931), Don't Bet on Women (1931), Back Street (1932), Cynara (1932), and a co-writing credit on Torch Singer (1933). Additional credits from that period include Love Time (1934), Down to Their Last Yacht (1934), Shanghai (1935), Give Us This Night (1936), More Than a Secretary (1936), and Women of Glamour (1937). Starling continued working into the 1940s, contributing to Three Blind Mice (1938), He Married His Wife (1940), Moon Over Miami (1941), Footlight Serenade (1942), The Impostor (1944), It's a Pleasure (1945), Three Little Girls in Blue (1946), and The Time, the Place and the Girl (1946).
