About

Alzenia Lynn Hamilton (April 25, 1930 – June 19, 2025) was an American actress born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, to Nancy and Louis Hamilton. At age twelve, she relocated with her family to Chicago Heights, Illinois, where she attended Bloom High School. She trained at the Goodman Theatre and began her professional career in community theatre in Chicago before moving on to a decades-long presence in stage and television.

Hamilton made her Broadway debut in 1959 in Only in America and went on to appear in three additional Broadway productions through 1963: Face of a Hero, Tambourines to Glory, and The Cool World. Alongside her Broadway work, she performed in numerous Off-Broadway productions and spent three years with the New York Shakespeare Festival.

Her television career brought her widest recognition. She became closely associated with two long-running series in the 1970s. On the NBC sitcom Sanford and Son, which ran from 1972 to 1977, Hamilton played Donna Harris, a nurse who served as the girlfriend and recurring fiancée of Fred Sanford. The role was considered her most prominent. When the series was revived in 1980 under the title Sanford, Hamilton was not invited to return and the character was written out. Concurrently, beginning in 1973, she appeared as Verdie Grant Foster, a neighbor of the Walton family, on The Waltons, making multiple appearances in that role through 1981. She also portrayed cousin Georgia Anderson in the miniseries Roots: The Next Generations.

Hamilton's television credits extended across multiple genres and decades. She guest starred as Mother Tabitha in the 1969 Gunsmoke episode "The Sisters," appeared as Laura Padget in the Barnaby Jones episode "Sunday: Doomsday" on February 4, 1973, and played the wife of a police detective in season three of Mannix. She appeared as Edith Dobey, Captain Dobey's wife, in the Starsky & Hutch episode "Captain Dobey, You're Dead!" and held a recurring role as Judge Fulton on The Practice. Additional television appearances included Good Times, 227, The Golden Girls, Dangerous Women, Generations, and Port Charles.

A persistent rumor held that Hamilton was the younger sister of LaWanda Page, her Sanford and Son costar. The claim circulated online and was referenced in Page's Los Angeles Times obituary, but the two women were not related. The confusion arose in part because Page had a younger sister who coincidentally shared the name Lynn Hamilton. Series lead Demond Wilson confirmed the rumor to be false in 2016. Despite having no familial connection, Hamilton and Page became close friends.

In November 1964, Hamilton married poet and playwright Frank Jenkins. The marriage lasted 49 years, until Jenkins's death in August 2014. Hamilton died at her home in Chicago on June 19, 2025, at the age of 95.
