About

Lyndon Brook (10 April 1926 – 9 January 2004) was a British actor who worked across stage, film, and television. Born in Los Angeles, California, to British parents, Brook came from a family with deep roots in the acting profession. His father, Clive Brook, had achieved stardom in silent films and built a career in Hollywood playing quintessential English characters. Brook's elder sister, Faith, also pursued acting professionally. Sent back to England for his education, Brook attended Stowe School and later gained stage experience at Cambridge University.

Brook's screen career began in 1949 with a minor role in the film Train of Events, which featured Valerie Hobson and John Clements. In 1951, Laurence Olivier invited Brook to join his company at the St James's Theatre in London for a double bill celebrating the Festival of Britain, comprising Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra and George Bernard Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra. It was during these productions that Brook met actress Elizabeth Kentish, who would become his wife. The same year, these two productions also constituted his Broadway credits.

Brook's film work gained considerable momentum in the mid-1950s. In 1954 he appeared opposite Gregory Peck in The Purple Plain, playing an impressionable navigator in a story set during the Burma campaign. Two years later he co-starred with Kenneth More in Reach for the Sky, one of the most widely seen British Second World War dramas of the period. He also appeared alongside Michael Hordern and Dirk Bogarde in The Spanish Gardener in 1956, and opposite Bogarde again in Song Without End in 1960, portraying Richard Wagner to Bogarde's Franz Liszt. His later film appearances included The Hireling, Plenty, and Defence of the Realm.

Television became a significant part of Brook's career over subsequent decades. He appeared in I, Claudius, made three appearances across The Avengers and The New Avengers, and had a role in the Crown Court episode "The Getaway" in 1974. In 1979 he portrayed George VI alongside Timothy West's Winston Churchill in the BBC production Churchill and the Generals. Brook also worked as a writer, scripting the 1957 television series Love Her to Death, which starred Peter Wyngarde in the lead role. He died in London on 9 January 2004.
