About
Lyle Tayo, born Lyle Minnie Shipman on January 19, 1889, in Elmdale, Kansas, was an American actress who built a career spanning both stage and screen. She also performed under the name Lyle Barton. Raised in Kansas City, Missouri, alongside her elder sister Birleen, Tayo went on to establish herself across multiple entertainment mediums.
Her stage work brought her to Broadway in 1911, where she appeared in the musical The Dream Girl. Her screen career proved prolific, encompassing more than 50 film appearances between 1921 and 1948. Much of that work was concentrated at the Hal Roach Studios, where she featured in numerous short comedies, including several productions supporting the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy.
Tayo died on May 2, 1971, at the age of 82, and is interred at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery.
