About
Lydia Sherwood (5 May 1906 – 20 April 1989) was a British stage and film actress whose career spanned several decades on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in the early twentieth century, she worked across London's theatrical circuit and appeared on Broadway during the 1930s.
Sherwood began her stage career in 1925 with a production of Lavender Ladies, a comedy play by Daisy Fisher, performed at the Comedy Theatre in London. She returned to the Comedy Theatre in 1928 for The Last Hour, and in 1930 appeared in She Stoops to Conquer at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith. Her London stage work continued into the following decade, with a role in Uncle Vanya at the Westminster Theatre in 1937 and an appearance in Hamlet at the New Theatre in 1951.
Alongside her London engagements, Sherwood established a presence on Broadway, where she performed between 1930 and 1938. Her Broadway credits include the play Insult and I Have Been Here Before.
