About
Thomas Luke MacFarlane was born on January 19, 1980, in London, Ontario, Canada, where he grew up alongside twin sister Ruth and older sister Rebecca. His father Thomas served as director of student health services at the University of Western Ontario, and his mother Penny worked as a mental health nurse. MacFarlane attended London Central Secondary School and the Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts before pursuing formal dramatic training at the Juilliard School in New York City.
His professional career began with an early television appearance opposite Cynthia Nixon in Robert Altman's Sundance Channel miniseries Tanner on Tanner. He subsequently took on a leading role in the 2005 FX series Over There, portraying PV2 Frank "Dim" Dumphy, and later appeared in the 2009 two-part miniseries Iron Road. MacFarlane gained wider recognition through his recurring role as Scotty Wandell, husband to Kevin Walker, on the ABC drama Brothers & Sisters, a part he held from 2006 to 2011. Additional television credits include Jason Howell in the Canadian sitcom Satisfaction, Rick Lincoln on NBC's The Night Shift, Chaplain Hopkins on PBS's Mercy Street, and D'avin Jaqobis in the Syfy science fiction series Killjoys, which ran from 2015 to 2019. He guest starred as Sam Parker in an episode of Shifting Gears in January 2026.
MacFarlane has maintained a parallel presence in film and television movies. He began working with the Hallmark Channel in 2014, appearing in productions including The Memory Book, Christmas Land, Maggie's Christmas Miracle, The Birthday Wish, The Mistletoe Promise, and Chateau Christmas, the last of which incorporated his cello playing. In 2022, he co-starred with Billy Eichner in the theatrical release Bros, playing Aaron Shepard in a romantic comedy notable for featuring an entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast.
His stage work spans both New York and regional theater. In late 2003, MacFarlane was among the four leads in Juvenilia at Playwrights Horizons, running from November 14 through December 21. In May 2004, he played the lead in the American premiere of Where Do We Live at the Vineyard Theatre, a production subsequently cited by the 2005 GLAAD Media Awards for Outstanding New York Theatre. He appeared alongside Jill Clayburgh and Hamish Linklater in the off-Broadway production of The Busy World Is Hushed at Playwrights Horizons in the summer of 2006, and reprised that role at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles in February 2007. In February 2015, he starred in the world premiere of Reverberation at Hartford Stage in Connecticut. MacFarlane also participated in a one-night celebrity staging of Howard Ashman's unproduced musical Dreamstuff at the Hayworth Theatre in Los Angeles, directed by Michael Urie, alongside Eden Espinosa, Vicki Lewis, Fred Willard, and David Blue.
His Broadway credit came in 2011 with The Normal Heart, for which he received the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance. MacFarlane also has a background in music, having served as lead singer and songwriter for the band Fellow Nameless, which originated at the Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts under the name Slipnaught. The band recorded an underground album and additional tracks, including three songs produced during a development deal with Maverick Records. In addition to the cello, MacFarlane plays the trumpet.
MacFarlane publicly came out as gay in an April 2008 interview with The Globe and Mail. He became a naturalized American citizen on June 12, 2018. On June 4, 2023, MacFarlane and his partner, alpine skier Hig Roberts, announced the birth of their first child.
