About

Luke James Boyd, born June 13, 1984, in New Orleans, Louisiana, is an American singer, songwriter, and actor whose career spans music, television, film, and Broadway. Raised by a single mother, Boyd developed an early passion for performance after watching a contestant sing Donny Hathaway's version of "A Song for You" on Showtime at the Apollo. His mother's record collection introduced him to artists including Marvin Gaye, Willie Nelson, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, and Alabama, all of whom shaped his musical sensibility. Boyd attended St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, where his classmates included future OFWGKTA member Frank Ocean. During that period, he joined a musical trio called Upskale with Quinten Spears and Tah, an experience that connected him with his longtime manager, director, and choreographer Frank Gatson. After graduating, Boyd relocated to Los Angeles, where he and Spears later formed the R&B duo Luke & Q, with Boyd performing under the name Luke The Singer.

Luke & Q secured an opening slot for R&B artist Tyrese Gibson, a connection that brought them into contact with Gibson's primary songwriting and production team, the Underdogs, and ultimately led the duo to sign with J Records. Their 2006 debut single, "My Turn," failed to chart. During the duo's subsequent inactivity and eventual disbandment in 2010, Boyd concentrated on songwriting, collaborating with producer Danja and contributing to projects by Chris Brown, including "Crawl" from Brown's album Graffiti, as well as Justin Bieber's "That Should Be Me," Britney Spears's "Kill the Lights," and Keri Hilson's "Do It." In 2005, Boyd appeared in Destiny's Child's "Soldier" music video alongside the other members of Upskale, and in 2011 Beyoncé selected him to appear in her "Run the World (Girls)" video. That same year, she chose him as an opening act for her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, which ran into 2014.

Boyd launched his solo recording career through a series of independent releases. His debut mixtape, #Luke, was released as a free digital download in December 2011, followed by a second mixtape, Whispers in the Dark, in December 2012. He signed with producer Danja's label N.A.R.S. in a joint venture with Island Records to release his self-titled debut studio album in 2014. The album's single "I Want You" earned a nomination for Best R&B Performance at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, where it lost to Usher's "Climax." Boyd received a second Grammy nomination at that same ceremony for Best R&B Song for "Options (Wolfjames Version)." His 2017 single "Drip," remixed with a feature from ASAP Ferg, preceded his second studio album, to feel love/d, released independently in 2020 following a two-year hiatus from music. That album received a nomination for Best R&B Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.

Alongside his music career, Boyd built a substantial presence in television and film. In 2016 he auditioned for the role of R&B singer Johnny Gill in BET's miniseries The New Edition Story after being considered by longtime associate Elijah Kelley, who was ultimately cast as Ricky Bell; Boyd was cast as Gill and appeared in the 2017 broadcast. From 2017 to 2019 he played Noah Brooks as a series regular in Lee Daniels's musical drama Star on FOX. His additional television credits include HBO's Insecure, USA's Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G., BET's The Bobby Brown Story, and a role in the third season of The Chi, which premiered on June 21, 2020. In film, he appeared alongside Regina Hall and Issa Rae in Will Packer's Little in 2019. In 2024, Boyd starred as a lead male character in Them: The Scare, the Amazon Prime Video sequel series to Them.

Boyd brought his performance work to the Broadway stage in 2021, appearing in Thoughts of a Colored Man, adding a theatrical credit to a career that has moved consistently across music, screen, and live performance.
