About

Luke George Evans, a Welsh actor and singer born on 15 April 1979 in Pontypool, Wales, was raised in Aberbargoed as the only child of Yvonne and David Evans. He grew up as a Jehovah's Witness, leaving the religion at age 16 and departing school at the same time. At 17, he relocated to Cardiff to study with singing coach Louise Ryan, and in 1997 earned a scholarship to London Studio Centre in Kings Cross, London, graduating in 2000.

Following his graduation, Evans spent nearly a decade working in London theatre. Between 2000 and 2008, his West End credits included La Cava, Taboo, Rent, Miss Saigon, and Avenue Q, alongside appearances at the Edinburgh Festival and in various London fringe productions. In 2008, he took on the role of Vincent in Peter Gill's Small Change at the Donmar Warehouse, a performance that earned him a nomination for the Evening Standard Award for Outstanding Newcomer and drew the attention of film casting directors and American talent agencies. Later that same year, he returned to the Donmar Warehouse to play Yves Montand in Piaf.

Evans made his film debut at age thirty, landing the role of the Greek god Apollo in the 2010 remake of Clash of the Titans. A succession of film roles followed in quick succession. In 2010 and 2011, he appeared as Clive in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, as a thug in Robin Hood, and as handyman Andy in Tamara Drewe. He played DI Craig Stokes opposite Jason Statham and Paddy Considine in Blitz, portrayed the Musketeer Aramis in Paul W. S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers, and took on the role of Zeus in Tarsem Singh's Greek epic Immortals. He also joined John Cusack in James McTeigue's The Raven, playing Detective Emmett Fields in a story set in mid-nineteenth century Baltimore, with filming taking place in Budapest and Serbia.

In 2011, Evans began filming Peter Jackson's three-part adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, in which he played Bard the Bowman across all three installments. In 2013, he portrayed the antagonist Owen Shaw in Fast & Furious 6, and the following year took the title role in Dracula Untold. He appeared in the thriller The Girl on the Train in 2016, and in 2017 played the villainous Gaston in Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast, directed by Bill Condon and co-starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens. That same year, he portrayed William Moulton Marston, the creator of Wonder Woman, in the biographical drama Professor Marston and the Wonder Women.

On television, Evans starred as newspaper illustrator John Schuyler Moore in Seasons 1 and 2 of the TNT drama The Alienist, which ran from 2018 to 2020. In 2020, he appeared in the three-part miniseries The Pembrokeshire Murders, and in 2021 played Lars Lee in the Hulu drama Nine Perfect Strangers, based on Liane Moriarty's novel and featuring Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, and Michael Shannon. He also played the Coachman in Robert Zemeckis's live-action Pinocchio alongside Tom Hanks in 2022, and starred in the black ops military series Echo 3 that same year.

Evans released his debut studio album, At Last, on 22 November 2019, and subsequently embarked on the At Last! The Live Tour in 2021. He was named Man of the Year at the ninth annual Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards.

In 2026, Evans made his Broadway debut in the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in a revival of The Rocky Horror Show, marking his first appearance on the Broadway stage.
