About

Luis Alberni (October 4, 1886 – December 23, 1962) was a Spanish-born American character actor who worked in both stage and film. He was born in Barcelona, Spain, and before pursuing a career in performance, he earned a bachelor's degree and studied law. He also spent time acting in stock theater in Marseille for four years before returning to Barcelona.

Alberni's path to the United States came through an invitation from American humorist Wilson Mizner and playwright Paul Armstrong, who encountered him while he was performing in Bordeaux and offered their assistance in establishing himself stateside. In April 1912, he made the transatlantic crossing to New York City aboard the S/S Nieuw Amsterdam, traveling as a steerage passenger.

Once in New York, Alberni built a career across both stage and screen. His first film appearance came in 1915 in Children of the Ghetto, a Jewish-themed drama. On Broadway, he appeared in more than a dozen productions between 1915 and 1928, among them The Outrageous Mrs. Palmer, Deep River, the musical Lace Petticoat, Near Santa Barbara, Dreams for Sale, 39 East, and the original 1924–1925 production of What Price Glory?

In the sound era of Hollywood, Alberni took on several notable film roles, including Jacopo in The Count of Monte Cristo (1934), Mr. Louis Louis in Easy Living (1937), and the mayor in A Bell for Adano (1945).

In his personal life, Alberni married Charlotte on April 18, 1919, in New York City. The couple had three children before divorcing on February 3, 1938. Alberni died in 1962 at the motion picture actors' home in Woodland Hills, California. He is interred in an unmarked grave at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood.
