About
Ludwig Satz (18 February 1891 – 31 August 1944) was an actor in Yiddish theater and film whose Broadway career spanned from 1926 to 1937. Born in Lemberg (Lwów), Austria-Hungary, in the territory now known as Lviv, Ukraine, he became widely recognized for his comic roles on both the Yiddish stage and in film.
Satz demonstrated an early commitment to performance: at eighteen he organized his own theater company in Galicia. He emigrated to the United States in 1912, where he built a career that extended across Yiddish theater, film, and Broadway. A 1925 New York Times article identified him as the greatest Yiddish comic actor of the time.
His Broadway work included the productions Money Mad and Potash and Perlmutter, Detectives. Among his more prominent Broadway appearances was the 1926 production Potash and Perlmutter, presented by A. H. Woods, in which he played the role of Abe Potash. On the Yiddish stage, he appeared in A Galitsianer Khasene, a wedding-themed production with music by Herman Wohl and lyrics by Boris Rozenthal, alongside Zina Goldstein, and in Ven di zun geyt oyf with Ola Lilith.
In film, Satz played the male lead in the 1931 production His Wife's Lover, known in Yiddish as Zayn Vaybs Lubovnik, which was promoted as the first Jewish musical comedy talking picture. His final role came in 1943 in The Golden Land at the Public Theatre.
Satz died in New York City on 31 August 1944. He was survived by his widow, Lillie, née Feinman and daughter of actress Dinah Stettin; three daughters, Celia, Mimi, and Frances; and two brothers, Alexander and Eli, the latter an actor who performed professionally under the name Eli Mintz. His papers are held at the American Jewish Historical Society in Boston and New York.
