About

Lucille Benson (July 17, 1914 – February 17, 1984) was an American character actress born in Scottsboro, Alabama, whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television across several decades. After her mother died of tuberculosis, Benson was adopted by her aunt, Mrs. John Benson. She served as both valedictorian and class president at Jackson County High School, then pursued higher education at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, before enrolling at Northwestern's School of Drama in Evanston, Illinois. Following a brief period working as a teacher, she relocated to New York in the 1930s to pursue acting.

Benson's stage career in New York began in the 1930s and extended through 1966. Her Broadway credits included Good Night, Ladies, The Doughgirls, the musical The Day Before Spring, Happy Birthday, As the Girls Go, Hotel Paradiso, Walking Happy, Period of Adjustment, and Ladies Night in a Turkish Bath. She also performed at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami, where she appeared in Tennessee Williams's Orpheus Descending. A three-month engagement in Las Vegas performing in Little Me alongside Donald O'Connor proved to be a turning point; a former Hollywood agent contacted her during that run and arranged a screen test at Paramount, which led to her being cast opposite Robert Redford in Little Fauss and Big Halsy.

Her film work brought her into collaboration with director Steven Spielberg on two occasions. In Spielberg's 1971 film Duel, starring Dennis Weaver, Benson played a woman operating a roadside Snakerama exhibit. She worked with Spielberg again in 1941 (1979), portraying a gas station owner whom John Belushi's character orders to refuel his fighter plane. In Paul Bartel's 1972 cult film Private Parts, Benson took on a leading role as Aunt Martha, the proprietor of the King Edward Hotel. She portrayed rancher Rita Babtree in Silver Streak (1976), a character who transports Gene Wilder's character by biplane to a train station, and played Birdie Huff in the crime drama Nashville 99 (1977). Her television work included a recurring role on The Ropers as Helen's mother, and during the first season of Bosom Buddies (1980–1981) she played Lilly Sinclair, the manager of a women-only hotel where characters portrayed by Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari disguise themselves as women to secure affordable rent. She also appeared as Mrs. Elrod in John Carpenter's Halloween II (1981).

Benson died on February 17, 1984, in a hospital in Scottsboro, Alabama, from liver cancer, at the age of 69. She was cremated, and her remains are interred beneath a bronze headstone at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro.
