About

Louise Rutter was an American stage and screen actress born on September 15, 1887, in Baltimore, Maryland, though some sources cite Philadelphia as her birthplace. She died before 1972.

Rutter began performing on stage from a young age, accumulating credits in productions including The Bonnie Brier Bush, The College Widow, The Lion and the Mouse, and The Heir to the Hoorah before establishing herself on Broadway. A 1906 photograph documents her in costume for The College Widow. Her Broadway career spanned from 1909 to 1916 and encompassed a substantial range of productions, among them Secret Service, The Devil, Held by the Enemy, The Sins of Society, Know Thyself, Mid-Channel, The Man of the Hour, and A Successful Calamity.

Among her most notable Broadway engagements was Sherlock Holmes in 1910, in which she played the role of Alice Faulkner opposite William Gillette's celebrated portrayal of the title character. Rutter appeared with Gillette in several productions during this period. Additional Broadway credits included Passers-by in 1911, A Rich Man's Son in 1912, Moloch in 1915, and Turn to the Right!, which ran into 1917.

In 1915, Rutter transitioned to silent film, appearing in three pictures: Milestones of Life for Thanhouser, and An Affair of Three Nations and The Menace of the Mute, both released by Pathé. The latter two were entries in a detective series adapted from stories by John T. McIntyre. Around this time, Rutter spoke publicly about the growing significance of motion pictures, expressing the view that film would eventually supplant live theater and that the medium's future potential was considerable.

In 1911, Rutter married Charles Perkins, an English brewer, and the couple had three children. In 1972, her daughter Doreen Carlos-Perkins donated a Sherlock Holmes deerstalker cap and additional memorabilia from William Gillette's career to the State of Connecticut for display at Gillette Castle.
