About
Louise Rial (born 1848 or 1849; died August 10, 1940) was an American actress whose career spanned stage and silent film. She was born into the Grover family, the daughter of Thomas C. Grover and Caroline Grover, née Chamberlin. She had four siblings: Burr, Leonard, Lucien, and Julia Grover.
Rial's performing career began in 1878 with a theatrical debut in Uncle Tom's Cabin. She went on to establish a sustained presence on Broadway, appearing in productions from 1887 through 1912. Her Broadway credits included The Return from Jerusalem, Into the Whirlwind, The Cub, the musical The Chaperons, and the play Fifty Miles from Boston, among other productions.
In 1915, Rial transitioned to silent film, working with the early Fox Film Corporation. Her screen credits included Sin (1915), The Marble Heart (1916), A Wife's Sacrifice (1916), The Spider and the Fly (1916), A Daughter of the Gods (1916), Tangled Lives (1917), and My Little Sister (1919).
Rial died on August 10, 1940, at her home in New York City at the age of 91. She is buried in an actor's plot at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York. Her daughter, Vira Rial, is interred in the same plot.
