About
Louise Le Baron was an American contralto singer born Louise Shepherd in Winchester, Massachusetts in 1874. She began her vocal career around the age of sixteen, singing with a church choir at engagements in the Boston area. Her formal training took place at the Boston Conservatory and with several private instructors, among them Madame Etta Edwards, who was then based in Boston.
Le Baron's professional career began with the Bostonian Opera Company before she joined the company of soprano Fritzi Scheff. During this period she took on two roles that would bring her to Broadway between 1904 and 1906: Lady Jane in The Two Roses, a musical by Ludwig Engländer and Stanislaus Stange with a libretto adapted from Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer, and Marie Louise de Bouvray in Mlle. Modiste, composed by Victor Herbert with lyrics by Henry Blossom. Her Broadway credits also included Boccaccio and Fatinitza.
In subsequent seasons Le Baron performed with the Castle Square Opera Company, the San Carlo Company, and the Aborn Opera Company, appearing with the last of these on two separate occasions. Her work with the Aborn company included the title role in Carmen, the role of Siebel in Faust, and Suzuki in Madame Butterfly. In 1913 she shared the male role of Alan-a-Dale with actress Florence Wickham in the comic opera Robin Hood, composed by Reginald De Koven with a libretto by Harry B. Smith.
As her performing career drew to a close, Le Baron settled in Lincoln, Nebraska, a city where she had consistently found a receptive audience, and established a voice school there. She had married at a young age and was survived by a son, Ernest Gillmore, who was serving aboard a United States Navy torpedo boat at the time of her death. Le Baron died in Lincoln on February 11, 1918, following a prolonged illness.
