About
Louis Hobson is an American musical theater actor who appeared on Broadway between 2009 and 2012 and later served as artistic director of Balagan Theatre in Seattle, Washington. He grew up in Puyallup, Washington, and attended Pacific Lutheran University, where he initially pursued music education before switching his focus to theater. He is married and has children.
Hobson built the early portion of his career in Seattle, performing at venues including the Village Theatre and the 5th Avenue Theatre. During that period he took on leading roles in productions of West Side Story, Miss Saigon, Evita, and Hair. His connection to what would become his most prominent Broadway credit began as early as 2002, when he portrayed the character Dan in a Seattle reading of Next to Normal.
In the fall of 2008, Hobson relocated to New York City and was cast in the Broadway production of Next to Normal, playing the two doctors for the entirety of the show's 22-month run. Following the close of that production in 2011, he appeared in supporting roles in three additional Broadway musicals: The People in the Picture and Bonnie and Clyde, both in 2011, and Leap of Faith in 2012. Hobson also received a Tony Award Best Play nomination and a Drama Desk Award Outstanding Play nomination, both in 2025.
After his Broadway work, Hobson spent time producing musicals and readings in New York City before returning to Seattle in 2013 to become artistic director of Balagan Theatre. There he starred as Jean Valjean in Balagan's production of Les Misérables and directed a production of Carrie featuring Tony Award winner Alice Ripley, his former Next to Normal co-star. He later departed Balagan to co-found a for-profit theatrical producing group with former Balagan executive director Jake Groshong; Balagan subsequently closed due to revenue issues. In March 2023, Hobson appeared in a production of Into the Woods at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. His film work includes appearances in Lucky Them (2013), Laggies (2014), and Outside In (2018).
