About

Louis-Gaston Ganne was born on 5 April 1862 in Buxières-les-Mines, in the Allier department of the Auvergne region of France. He died on 13 or 14 July 1923 in Paris. A composer and conductor, he worked across multiple genres, producing French operas, operettas, ballets, and marches.

Though born in Auvergne, Ganne spent his formative years in Issy-les-Moulineaux, on the outskirts of Paris. He received his musical training at the Conservatoire de Paris, where his teachers included César Franck and Jules Massenet. His conducting career took him to the Nouveau Théâtre de la Rue Blanche and the Folies-Bergère, and he later directed a concert series at the Monte Carlo Casino.

Among his compositions, Ganne is best remembered for two patriotic marches: Le père la victoire and La marche Lorraine. His output for the stage was extensive, beginning with Ophélia in 1887 and continuing through La Belle de Paris in 1922. His operettas, while numerous, are now seldom staged outside France. The most celebrated of them is Les saltimbanques, a circus-themed light opera in three acts that premiered in 1899. He also contributed to the ballet repertoire, including the 1902 work In Japan.

Two of Ganne's stage works reached Broadway. Il Saltimbanchi, derived from Les saltimbanques, and Hans, the Flute Player, based on his 1906 opera Hans, le joueur de flûte, both received Broadway productions. His broader catalog of operettas includes Tout Paris (1891), Rabelais (1892), Les colles des femmes (1893), Qui veut de l'amour? (1899), Miss Bouton d'Or (1902), Rhodope (1910), Cocorico (1913), and L'Archiduc des Folies-Bergère (1916), among others.
