About

Louie Ramsay (25 November 1929 – 6 March 2011) was a British actress who worked across stage and television over several decades. Born in Molteno, South Africa, to Scottish parents, she was raised in London. Her father, Melvin Ramsay, was a physician recognized for his work on ME/CFS. Ramsay received her education at the North London Collegiate School.

Her entry into the film world came through a friendship with Patricia Hitchcock, the daughter of director Alfred Hitchcock, who gave Ramsay a small role in his 1950 film Stage Fright. The following year, she made her West End debut as a chorus member in the musical South Pacific. In 1958, she was the subject of the television program This Is Your Life, when host Eamonn Andrews surprised her at the King's Theatre in Edinburgh.

During the 1970s, Ramsay performed at Laurence Olivier's National Theatre, where her credits included Peter Shaffer's Equus, The Misanthrope with Alec McCowen and Diana Rigg, and a production of J.B. Priestley's Eden End, in which she played the sister of Joan Plowright in Olivier's staging. It was during Eden End that Ramsay appeared on Broadway in 1975, with The Misanthrope among her credited Broadway appearances.

Television audiences came to know Ramsay widely through the ITV series Ruth Rendell Mysteries, in which she portrayed the wife of Chief Inspector Reg Wexford. The actor who played Wexford, George Baker, became her husband in real life.

Ramsay died on 6 March 2011 at the age of 81.
