About
Louie Freear, born Louisa Freear on 26 November 1871 in Lambeth, London, was an English actress and comedienne who performed on both sides of the Atlantic. She came from a theatrical family; her father, Henry Butler Freear, was an actor, and her mother, Mary Jane Freear (née Burke), worked as a vocalist. Her brother Walter Freear pursued a career as an actor, dancer, and comedian, while another brother, Alfred, worked as a musician.
Freear built her reputation on the London stage through a series of notable roles. In 1894, she played Flo Honeydew in The Lady Slavey, and in 1901 she appeared in George Dance's comic opera A Chinese Honeymoon, which brought her considerable success. She also took on the role of Puck in Herbert Beerbohm Tree's elaborate 1900 production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Contemporary accounts described her as "vital and diminutive."
Her career extended to Broadway, where she appeared in 1899 in Man in the Moon. In 1912, Freear married Charles Shepherd. She died on 23 March 1939 at her home in London and was buried at Brookwood Cemetery.
