About

Lou Rodgers is an American mezzo-soprano, opera singer, and opera director whose career has spanned performance and arts administration across several decades. She began singing professionally in the late 1950s, establishing herself through work with the New York City Opera. On April 26, 1959, she took part in the world premiere of Hugo Weisgall's Six Characters in Search of an Author with that company, a landmark event in American opera history.

Rodgers extended her stage work to Broadway in 1967, appearing in Illya Darling. Her career thus encompassed both the operatic and musical theater worlds during that period.

In 1975, Rodgers founded Golden Fleece Ltd., an opera company with a specific mission of presenting new American operas. She has served as the company's artistic director since its founding. In recognition of her contributions through that organization, the American Composers Alliance presented her with its Laurel Leaf Award in 1999.
