About
Lou Cutell (October 6, 1930 – November 21, 2021) was an American actor born in New York City to Sicilian parents. He later relocated with his family to Los Angeles, California, where he earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California.
Cutell launched his acting career on Broadway in 1961, taking on the role of William Berry in The Young Abe Lincoln. He continued performing on Broadway through 1964, with his credits during that period also including Little Me. Decades later, he returned to the stage as both writer and performer, scripting and appearing in the Broadway production The Sicilian Bachelor in the 1990s. In 2010, he co-wrote Viagara Falls with Joao Machado and starred in that production as well.
His television debut came in 1964 with a guest appearance on The Dick Van Dyke Show. Over the following decades, Cutell accumulated an extensive list of television credits, including guest roles on The Wild Wild West, Bridget Loves Bernie, The Bob Newhart Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Lou Grant, Alice, Barney Miller, The Love Boat, and Seinfeld, where he played Dr. Howard Cooperman in the 1995 episode "The Fusilli Jerry." He also held a recurring role on Betty White's Off Their Rockers. His final screen appearance was a role in the medical drama Grey's Anatomy in 2015.
Cutell's film work spanned several decades and included Rhinoceros, The World's Greatest Lover, The Black Marble, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, My Mom's a Werewolf, The Odd Couple II, and the 1985 film Pee-wee's Big Adventure, in which his portrayal of Amazing Larry became among his most recognized screen roles.
Cutell died on November 21, 2021, at the age of 91.
