About

Lorna Thayer, born Lorna Patricia Casey on August 16, 1919, in Boston, Massachusetts, was an American character actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television across several decades. She was the daughter of silent screen actress Louise Gibney and George Casey, who built sets for Universal Studios. Thayer began taking dance classes at age five and later attended Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles.

Her professional acting career began in 1946 with a production of Street Scene at the Players Ring, followed by a performance in Berkeley Square at the Geary Theatre in San Francisco. Her early film work included The Beast with a Million Eyes alongside Paul Birch in 1955, as well as minor roles in The Lusty Men, Texas City, and Frankie and Johnny.

Thayer's Broadway career ran from 1958 to 1964 and included three productions. She portrayed Mrs. McCarthy in the play Comes a Day in 1958 and played Bel Air Bonnie in Never Live Over a Pretzel Factory in 1964. She also appeared in Carousel during her time on Broadway.

Her television work included multiple appearances on Have Gun – Will Travel. She played Doris in the November 21, 1959, episode "The Golden Toad," written by Gene Roddenberry, and was cast as Serafina, wife of Colonel Benjamin Nunez, in the January 2, 1960, episode "The Prophet." She also appeared in the episode "Pandora's Box" as Hanna. In 1960, she took on a historical role in the Death Valley Days episode "The Gentle Sword," portraying Jessie Benton Frémont, wife of John C. Frémont, in a story set during the California gold rush involving a mining claim dispute.

Thayer is perhaps most widely recognized for her role in the 1970 film Five Easy Pieces, in which she played a waitress who refuses to accommodate Jack Nicholson's character's request for a side of wheat toast. The exchange became known as the "chicken salad sandwich scene" and remains one of the film's most memorable moments.

In her personal life, Thayer was married to actor George N. Neise, and the couple had two daughters. After a five-year battle with Alzheimer's disease, she died on June 4, 2005, at the Motion Picture and Television Fund Retirement Home in Woodland Hills, California, at the age of 85.
