About

Lolita San Miguel, born October 9, 1934, in New York City to Puerto Rican parents, is a dancer, choreographer, and Pilates educator recognized as one of the last surviving first-generation instructors certified directly by Joseph Pilates. She began dance training at age seven in Puerto Rico before relocating to New York, where she studied at the School of American Ballet. After graduating from Performing Arts High School in 1952, she appeared on Broadway that same year with the Slavenska-Franklin Co., marking her professional stage debut.

Following her Broadway appearance, San Miguel joined several prominent ballet companies, including the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, where she performed as a soloist for more than a decade. A knee injury in 1958 led her to Carola Trier's studio, where she was first introduced to the Pilates method. She subsequently sought out Joseph Pilates himself for direct instruction and, alongside Kathy Grant, became one of only two individuals ever certified by him to teach the method.

In 1977, San Miguel founded Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico, integrating Pilates training into the company's rehearsal practice. She served as Artistic Director of that organization until 2005, when, at age seventy, she transitioned her primary focus to international Pilates instruction. Since 2000, she has operated her own company, Pilates Y Mas Inc., based in Puerto Rico.

San Miguel launched her first Pilates Master Mentor Program group in Europe in May 2009, drawing participants from multiple countries. During that training, she visited Mönchengladbach, Germany, the birthplace of Joseph Pilates, and organized a Pilates Day celebration there. Noting that Pilates was not widely recognized in his hometown, she returned in 2010 and worked with local officials to install a commemorative plaque in his honor. She organized and directed an annual Pilates conference in Mönchengladbach through 2013, at which point she passed leadership of the event to Kathy Corey, who has continued it on a biennial basis. At the 2019 gathering, known as the Pilates Heritage Congress, 250 participants attended and a plaque was placed in front of Pilates' birthplace, with the site officially designated Pilates Platz.

Between 2013 and 2014, San Miguel introduced Lolita's Legacy, a 500-hour teacher-training program developed over two years and now taught exclusively by certified educators in countries around the world. In 2016, she organized an event at Ferncliff Cemetery in New York City to honor the memory of Joseph and Clara Pilates at their burial site, an event she repeated in 2018. She published a memoir, My Enchanted Life, in February 2021.
