About
Lolita Robertson was an American stage and screen actress born on March 7, 1888, in San Francisco, California. She performed on Broadway between 1913 and 1932, and alongside her husband, Austrian-born actor Max Figman, formed a husband-and-wife performing duo active in both theater and silent film. The couple had two children, Max Jr. and Lolita Figman.
Robertson's entry into Broadway came through circumstances of chance. When actress Alice Stone fell ill during rehearsals for Fine Feathers, playwright Eugene Walter asked Robertson to read Stone's part. The role was that of Jane Reynolds, and Robertson was subsequently offered the position permanently. At the time, she and Figman had a two-month-old infant, and she initially declined. After continuing to participate in rehearsals, she accepted the part. Fine Feathers opened at the Astor Theatre in New York in January 1913, following an earlier run at the Cort Theatre in Chicago beginning in August 1912. The production co-starred Wilton Lackaye and Robert Edeson and was considered a hit.
Robertson's Broadway career extended nearly two decades beyond that debut. Her credits include The Love Child, the play So This Is Politics, also known as Strange Bedfellows, and The Dubarry. The Dubarry, which opened in 1932, marked the final Broadway appearance of both Robertson and Figman, with Figman playing the role of Louis XV.
Beyond the stage, Robertson and Figman worked together in silent films, including productions made with the short-lived Masterpiece Film Manufacturing Company. The couple were also present at the formation of the Lasky Company in 1914, the organization that would later become Paramount Pictures.
Robertson and Figman remained married until Figman's death on February 13, 1952, at the age of 85, at Edgewater Rest, a nursing home in Bayside, Queens. Figman was 22 years Robertson's senior. Robertson herself died on May 1, 1959.
