About

Logan Carlisle Ramsey Jr. (March 21, 1921 – June 26, 2000) was an American actor whose career spanned nearly five decades across stage, television, and film. Born in Long Beach, California, he was the son of Harriet Lillian (née Kilmartin) and Captain Logan Carlisle Ramsey Sr., a Naval Aviator who commanded the aircraft carrier USS Block Island (CVE-21) and who raised the alarm during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The younger Ramsey himself served as a Naval Aviator aboard the subsequent USS Block Island (CVE-106), the namesake replacement for his father's sunken vessel. During his naval service, Ensign Ramsey took part in shipboard entertainment programs known as "smokers," which were held between boxing matches. Following the war, he relocated to New York City and trained as an actor under Lee Strasberg.

Ramsey's Broadway career extended from 1950 to 1966 and encompassed a range of productions. His earliest stage credits included The High Ground and The Devil's Disciple, both in 1950. He subsequently appeared in In the Summer House (1953), Sweet Bird of Youth, The Good Woman of Setzuan, Marathon '33, and The Great Indoors (1965), among other productions.

Outside the theater, Ramsey built a substantial career as a character actor in television and film. On television he was a frequent guest presence throughout the 1960s and 1970s, appearing on series including Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, Hawaii Five-O, M*A*S*H, Maude, Charlie's Angels, Quincy M.E., Mork & Mindy, Battlestar Galactica, Knight Rider, Night Court, Highway to Heaven, The Edge of Night, and Here Come the Brides, as well as the miniseries Testimony of Two Men and The Winds of War. His film work included Banning (1967), the Monkees film Head (1968), The Reivers (1969), The Traveling Executioner (1970), What's the Matter with Helen? (1971), the role of John Witter in the original Walking Tall trilogy, Cornbread Earl and Me (1975), Treasure of Matecumbe (1976), Mean Dog Blues (1978), Any Which Way You Can (1980), The Beast Within (1982), Joysticks (1983), Scrooged (1988), and Pass the Ammo (1988).

Ramsey was married to actress Anne Ramsey from 1954 until her death from cancer in 1988. The two appeared together on screen in both Any Which Way You Can and Scrooged. Ramsey died of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California, on June 26, 2000.
