About
Born June 29, 1919, in Toronto, Canada, Lloyd George Richards studied law at Wayne University before serving in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He went on to teach in the actor training program at New York University and headed the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. During the 1980s, Lloyd George Richards served as dean of the Yale School of Drama and artistic director of the Yale Repertory Theater. He married dancer Barbara Davenport; together they had two sons, Scott and Thomas.
His television credits include "The Piano Lesson," "American Playhouse," "Paul Robeson," "Roots: The Next Generations," "Freeman," "Visions," and "The Wide World of Mystery."
Lloyd George Richards received the National Medal of Arts in 1993. On June 29, 2006, Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in his honor.
