About

Lloyd Gough, born Michael Gough on September 21, 1907, in New York City, was an American actor who worked across theater, film, and television. He died on July 23, 1984, from an aortic aneurysm at the age of 76.

Gough's Broadway career spanned from 1934 to 1960 and included appearances in a range of productions. His stage credits encompassed the drama Compulsion, the play The Bad Seed, the fantasy Ondine, the comedy Roman Candle, and Cue for Passion, among others.

His screen career was significantly disrupted when he and his wife, actress and activist Karen Morley, were called before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Both invoked the Fifth Amendment, and the resulting blacklist effectively ended their Hollywood careers until the late 1960s. The consequences of the blacklist were visible as early as 1952, when Gough appeared as the main villain in Rancho Notorious but had his name removed from the film's credits. He later appeared in The Front (1976), a film addressing the Hollywood blacklist era, and his name in that production was accompanied by his blacklist date.

Television work occupied much of Gough's later career. In 1966, he appeared in the Perry Mason episode "The Case of the Scarlet Scandal" as Richard Bayler and played fur hunter Jacob Beamus in the Gunsmoke episode "The Treasure of John Walking Fox." From 1966 to 1967, he portrayed Daily Sentinel crime reporter Mike Axford in the television series The Green Hornet. In 1967, he guest-starred on Mannix as Senator Miniver in the episode "Turn Every Stone."

Gough married Karen Morley in 1943, and the marriage lasted until his death in 1984. They had one child together.
