Edward Lionel Pape was born on 17 April 1877 and died on 21 October 1944. An English-born actor, he worked in both stage and screen throughout his career, beginning his professional life in the United Kingdom before eventually relocating to the United States.
Pape established himself as a stage performer of considerable longevity, appearing in more than 20 Broadway productions between 1912 and 1935. His credits included The Simpleton of the Unexpected Isles, Birthday, While Parents Sleep, The Lake, and The Fatal Alibi, among other productions.
His screen work began during the silent film era and extended into the early 1940s. Over the course of that period, Pape accumulated more than 50 Hollywood film appearances, primarily in supporting roles and bit parts. He worked under directors including John Ford, Ernst Lubitsch, and George Cukor. Among his notable screen performances, he portrayed Katharine Hepburn's butler in George Cukor's The Philadelphia Story in 1940 and appeared as the oppressive coal mine owner in John Ford's How Green Was My Valley in 1941.
