About

Linda Darnell, born Monetta Eloyse Darnell on October 16, 1923, in Dallas, Texas, was an American actress whose career spanned film, theatre, and Broadway. She was one of four children born to postal clerk Calvin Roy Darnell and Margaret "Pearl" Brown, and had one maternal great-grandparent who was Cherokee. Her siblings included older sister Undeen and younger siblings Monte Maloya and Calvin Roy, Jr. Her parents' marriage was an unhappy one, and Darnell grew up in an atmosphere of domestic turmoil, describing herself as shy and reserved during her childhood years.

Darnell began modeling at age 11 and was performing on stage by age 13, initially taking up modeling to contribute income to the household and competing primarily in beauty contests. Her mother, Pearl, was the driving force behind her early ambitions in entertainment, steering her through contests and theatrical opportunities while largely neglecting her other children. In 1936, Darnell was cast in the southwestern premiere of Murder in the Cathedral through the Dallas Little Theater, and in 1937 she was hired as one of the Texanita hostesses at the Greater Texas and Pan-American Exposition. Before departing for Hollywood, she attended Sunset High School, which she entered in September 1937, studying Spanish and art.

A 20th Century Fox talent scout visited Dallas in November 1937, and after meeting Darnell, invited her to Hollywood for a screen test. She arrived in California in February 1938 alongside Mary Healy and Dorris Bowdon, but was turned away by studios on the grounds that she was, at 14, too young. After initially landing a contract at RKO Pictures through a Gateway to Hollywood talent search, she was eventually signed by 20th Century Fox and relocated to Hollywood on April 5, 1939, at the age of 15. The studio listed her age as 19. Her first film, Hotel for Women, went into production in April 1939, with Darryl F. Zanuck having cast her in a role originally intended for Loretta Young. Columnist Louella O. Parsons described Darnell at the time as naive and immature, though deeply loyal to Zanuck. Her true age became public later in 1939, making her one of the few actresses under 16 to serve as a leading lady in Hollywood films.

Throughout the 1940s, Darnell appeared in both lead and supporting roles in major productions for 20th Century Fox. She co-starred with Tyrone Power in four films, beginning with the romantic comedy Day-Time Wife in 1939, in which her performance drew favorable notices despite her youth. Their second pairing came in Brigham Young in 1940, a large-scale production that Fox regarded as its most expensive film to that point. The studio added 18 additional romantic scenes to the film following the box office success of Day-Time Wife. Darnell and Power also appeared together in The Mark of Zorro in 1940, which became one of their most recognized collaborations. Her biggest commercial success came with Forever Amber in 1947, an adaptation of a best-selling novel that became Fox's top-grossing release of that year. Critical recognition came through a range of other projects, including Summer Storm in 1944, Hangover Square and Fallen Angel in 1945, Unfaithfully Yours in 1948, A Letter to Three Wives in 1949, and No Way Out in 1950.

Darnell's career extended beyond film to include stage work. In 1956, she appeared on Broadway in the drama Harbor Lights, marking her credited Broadway debut. She died on April 10, 1965, at the age of 41.
