About
Lily Cahill (July 17, 1888 – July 20, 1955) was an American actress who worked across stage, film, and television over the course of a career spanning more than four decades. Born in San Antonio, Texas, she was the granddaughter of Confederate Army Colonel John Jacob Myers.
Cahill began her professional career in film around 1910, taking supporting roles in silent pictures directed by D.W. Griffith. By 1911, she had advanced to leading parts, appearing in A Victim of Circumstances and The Failure. In 1912, she transitioned away from film and toward the stage, making her Broadway debut in The Road to Arcady, a short-lived production written by Edith Sessions Tupper. Her Broadway career extended from that debut through 1939, with her stage activity in New York continuing into 1941.
Among her many Broadway appearances, Cahill took part in Roi Cooper Megrue's Under Cover in 1914 and Brandon Tynan's The Melody of Youth in 1916. She appeared in Henri Lavedan's The Marquis de Priola in 1919, followed the next year by Matheson Lang's The Purple Mask and Owen Davis's Opportunity. Arthur Goodrich's So This Is London brought her to the stage in 1922, and Jesse Lynch Williams's Lovely Lady followed in 1925. She appeared in Sil-Vara's Caprice in 1928 and Rachel Crothers's As Husbands Go in 1931. Later credits included Sidney Howard's Alien Corn in 1933, S. N. Behrman's Rain From Heaven in 1934, George S. Kaufman's First Lady in 1935, and Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse's Life With Father in 1941. She also performed on the London stage and was active in regional theatre in both the northeastern United States and her native Texas.
Cahill returned to film periodically throughout her career. She appeared in Colonel Carter of Cartersville in 1915, My Sin in 1931, and So This Is London in 1939. In 1953, she made a television appearance in one episode of The Philco Television Playhouse.
In her personal life, Cahill was briefly married to Irish-born American actor Brandon Tynan.
