About

Lillian Kemble Cooper (March 21, 1892 – May 4, 1977) was an English-American actress whose career spanned Broadway and Hollywood film. Born in London, England, she came from a theatrical family with deep roots in the Kemble acting dynasty. Her father, Frank Kemble-Cooper, was a stage actor, and both her elder sister Violet Kemble-Cooper and younger brother Anthony Kemble-Cooper (1904–2000) pursued acting careers as well.

Cooper's stage work began in London, where she made her first appearance as a chorus member in a September 1914 production of The Chocolate Soldier at the Lyric Theatre. She subsequently relocated to the United States, launching a Broadway career that extended from 1906 to 1949. Among her stage credits were the musical The Night Boat, and the plays A Roman Servant, The New Poor, All Dressed Up, and Our Betters. In 1919, she appeared in the original production of Hitchy-Koo.

Beyond the stage, Cooper built a career in Hollywood film, appearing in approximately 20 productions, predominantly in minor supporting roles. She was frequently cast as aristocrats, spinsters, and servants. Her most recognized screen appearance was a brief role as Bonnie Blue Butler's nurse in London in Gone with the Wind.

In her personal life, Cooper married former World War I pilot and writer Louis G. Bernheimer in 1923; he died in 1930. Her second marriage was to actor Guy Bates Post, a union that lasted more than thirty years until his death in 1968. Cooper died on May 4, 1977, in Los Angeles and was buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
