About

Lillebil Ibsen, born Sofie Parelius Monrad Krohn on 6 August 1899 in Kristiania, Norway, was a Norwegian dancer and actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television across several decades. She died in Oslo on 22 August 1989. Her father was engineer Georg Monrad Krohn, and her mother, Gyda Martha Kristine Andersen, later known as Gyda Christensen, was a professional choreographer and ballet instructor. On 25 August 1919, she married pilot and film director Tancred Ibsen. Their son, Tancred Ibsen Jr., born in 1921, became a Norwegian diplomat.

Ibsen's training in dance began at an early age under her mother's instruction. Her debut as a dancer came at Nationaltheatret in 1911, when she appeared in the ballet pantomime Prinsessen på erten, an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Princess and the Pea. She subsequently studied ballet with Hans Beck in Copenhagen and later with Russian choreographer Mikhail Fokine. Beginning at age sixteen, she performed in Berlin under the direction of Max Reinhardt, taking leading roles in his pantomimes Die Schäferin, Lillebils Hochzeitsreise, Prima Ballerina, Sumurun, and Die grüne Flöte. Her stage debut as an actress took place at Nationaltheatret in Kristiania in 1915, in the children's comedy Den uskikkelige lille prinsesse.

In 1923, Ibsen appeared on Broadway in a production of Peer Gynt, bringing her stage work to an international audience. Her first film role had come four years earlier, in the 1919 Swedish production Sången om den eldröda blomman. In 1924, she made her debut as a revue artist at Chat Noir in Oslo.

From 1929 to 1956, Ibsen was a member of Det Nye Teater, where she performed classical comedy roles alongside a range of characters drawn from the works of Henrik Ibsen, including Nora, Mrs. Alving, and Gina Ekdal. She then joined Nationaltheatret, where she performed from 1956 to 1969 in both dramatic and comic roles. She also appeared in productions for the television theatre Fjernsynsteatret. Among her notable film appearances was a supporting role as fashion house mogul Thyra Lennberg in Arne Mattsson's 1958 cult mystery thriller Mannequin in Red.

In addition to her performing career, Ibsen authored an autobiography titled Det begynte med dansen. In 1969, she was decorated Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav.
