About

Lewis Sealy, born William Armiger Sealy Lewis in Dublin, Ireland, in 1851, was an Irish actor, stage manager, and film exhibitor whose career spanned the London stage, early cinema, and Broadway. He died on March 19, 1931, and was buried at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York, survived by a daughter and two sons.

Sealy built his early professional life in London, where he worked as both a stage manager and character actor. Among his stage management credits were productions at the St. James' Theatre in 1890, including As You Like It, Esther Sandraz, and Your Wife, as well as Miss Hoyden's Husband at the Shaftesbury Theatre that same year. He also served as stage director for Lily Langtry and Olga Nethersole. As a performer, he co-wrote and appeared in A Heathen Goddess at the West London Theatre in 1894, played an Officer in The Man in the Iron Mask at the Adelphi in 1899, and took the role of Cecil Savoyard in Fanny's First Play, which ran at the Little Theatre and Kingsway Theatre from 1911 into 1912. He followed that with the role of Corney Doyle in John Bull's Other Island at the Kingsway Theatre in 1912 and 1913. His London acting credits also included The Chetwynd Affair at the Royalty Theatre in 1904 and The Merchant of Venice at Terry's Theatre in 1905.

In the 1890s, Sealy was active in early film exhibition, presenting Birt Acres' Kineopticon under the name the Royal Cinematoscope. He first traveled to New York in 1908, where he worked as a stage manager and occasional actor, with Captain Brassbound's Conversion serving as his first New York production. After returning to London for a period, he came back to New York around 1915 to pursue work in film. His silent film appearances included Barbara Frietchie in 1915, in which he played Judge Frietchie, and The Witching Hour in 1916, where he portrayed Justice George Prentice. A Variety review of that film noted that Sealy brought a dignity commensurate with the role. Additional film credits included The Unborn and The Primitive Call in 1916 and 1917 respectively, Draft 258 in 1917, His House in Order and The Fatal Hour in 1920, and A Virgin Paradise in 1921.

Sealy's Broadway career extended from 1916 to 1930 and encompassed a range of productions. His credits included Margaret Schiller, which opened in January 1916, and The Fountain of Youth and A Marriage of Convenience, both in 1918. He appeared as Lord Hastings in King Richard III in March 1920 and as Jayson in The Awful Truth, which ran from September 1922 into January 1923. In January 1924 he played Pomeroy in Merry Wives of Gotham, and the following year took the role of Richards in Lass O'Laughter. He returned to The Merchant of Venice on Broadway in 1928, this time as Balthasar, and closed his Broadway career with Dishonored Lady in 1930, playing the role of Sims. His database credits also list King Richard II among his Broadway appearances.

Sealy was portrayed by Sean O'Bryan in the 1992 film Chaplin.
