About

Leonard Alfred George Osborn (11 November 1914 – 28 September 1994) was an English tenor and actor born in Tooting, London, who became one of the most recognized performers of Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire through his long association with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. Before entering professional performance, Osborn worked as a chemist and participated in amateur Gilbert and Sullivan productions. He joined D'Oyly Carte as a tenor chorister in 1937, a decision partly motivated by the fact that the company's pay for choristers exceeded his earnings in his previous occupation.

During his first season with the company, Osborn was assigned the small role of First Yeoman in The Yeomen of the Guard, occasionally stepping into the slightly larger role of Leonard Meryll. In 1938 his responsibilities expanded to include the Defendant in Trial by Jury and Francesco in The Gondoliers, and in 1939 he substituted as Earl Tolloller in Iolanthe. His early career with D'Oyly Carte was interrupted when he joined the Royal Air Force in July 1940, during which time he performed in numerous military concerts. He continued to sing the Defendant and chorus roles in 1940 before his military service began.

Following the end of World War II, Osborn rejoined D'Oyly Carte in 1946 as principal tenor, immediately taking on Tolloller and Nanki-Poo in The Mikado. From 1946 to 1959, his principal roles included the Defendant in Trial by Jury, the Duke of Dunstable in Patience, Tolloller in Iolanthe, Colonel Fairfax in The Yeomen of the Guard, Marco in The Gondoliers, Mr. Box in Cox and Box, and Richard Dauntless in Ruddigore, which he identified as his favourite role. He added Cyril in Princess Ida to his repertoire from 1954. His Broadway appearances with the company spanned 1939 to 1955 and included productions of The Gondoliers, The Yeomen of the Guard, Iolanthe, Ruddigore, and Princess Ida, among others.

Osborn featured in ten of the eleven D'Oyly Carte recordings produced by Decca between 1949 and 1955. His recorded roles across those sessions were the Defendant in Trial by Jury (1949), Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore (1949), Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance (1950), Nanki-Poo in The Mikado (1950), Marco in The Gondoliers (1950), Richard Dauntless in Ruddigore (1951), Fairfax in The Yeomen of the Guard (1951), Tolloller in Iolanthe (1952), the Duke of Dunstable in Patience in a partial recording (1952), and Cyril in Princess Ida (1955). Reviewing a 1951 performance of Iolanthe, The Times noted that his tenor voice had "a ring and a line that did justice to 'Blue Blood.'" The Gramophone described him as "one of the most melodious Ralph Rackstraws that the D'Oyly Carte Company have ever produced," citing his characterization, enunciation, and top notes.

Osborn departed D'Oyly Carte in November 1959 to enter the retail business in Surrey, though he continued to direct amateur productions on an occasional basis. In 1975, during the company's centennial season, he was invited to take part in a special performance of Trial by Jury in which fourteen former stars of the company joined the regular D'Oyly Carte chorus. He returned to the company in 1977 as stage director for Princess Ida during the Sadler's Wells Jubilee season. That same year, in Queen Elizabeth II's Jubilee Year, he directed the company's Royal Command Performance at Windsor Castle. Osborn served as a production director for D'Oyly Carte until 1980. He died in London at the age of 79.
